Spized x European Championship

As a sporting goods manufacturer with lots of sports-loving employees, the European Football Championship in our own country was of course a must. Whether at the German, French or English matches, at least one spized employee almost always had a reason to cheer.

Deutschland

Naturally, the German group matches were the number one topic in the past weeks. While some employees watched the German national team's opening victory from the comfort of their own sofas, our colleague Tim was at one of the many fan zones in Cologne for the opening game. Amid an already exuberant atmosphere, content for our social media channels was created before celebrating the fabulous performance of Julian Nagelsmann's team from 9 PM onwards. The start of the next summer fairy tale?

The second group match against Switzerland was then "mandatory" for every spized employee. A team event with a big screen, delicious food, and colorful jerseys as far as the eye could see. The fitting result and early qualification for the round of 16 perfectly rounded off a sociable football evening with a large group.

The clash with our neighbors from Switzerland on matchday three was all about "securing the group win." After the German team was trailing until stoppage time, Niclas Füllkrug headed his team to the top of the table shortly before the final whistle, bringing smiles to thousands of fans. Among them were Leon and Gianna, who celebrated together at Cologne's Heumarkt.

Frankreich

Since spized has employees not only in Germany but also in France with Robin and Florent, the games of the French national team were the highlights of the past weeks for our two French colleagues. For the first game, our two "Frenchies" even traveled to Düsseldorf to create content for our French Instagram account. Together with the social media team, they watched the game against the strong Austrian team in our Cologne office and celebrated the narrow opening victory.

On matchday two, the French team faced the Netherlands in the group's top match, with both teams having won their opening games. Thus, it was an early final for the group win, but neither team managed to secure it. The first 0-0 draw of this European Championship brought both teams to the round of 16, but they still had to fight for the group win in the third match. Robin watched the match with some friends while barbecuing in perfect weather. "Not really convincing, but we'll take the point."

In the third group match, the already eliminated Polish team awaited the French favorites. An easy win would have sufficed for the group win, as Austria managed to beat the Netherlands in the parallel game. But it didn't happen. A 1-1 draw in the final group match dropped the 2018 world champions to second place in the group. "We progressed from a really tough group, but overall the performances were a bit disappointing. With a win, we would have faced an easier tournament path," summarized the two about the group stage.

England

For a few months now, we've also had two genuine Englishmen, Bobby and Andrew, in our team. Although they've been living in Germany for some time, they remained loyal to their homeland, rooting for the Three Lions. They had a victory to celebrate in the opening match as well. After a long workweek, they watched the match from their couches at home and saw a narrow and unspectacular 1-0 win against Serbia. But "a win is a win," they summed up the match.

For the second game, the two headed to Heumarkt, hoping to secure early qualification for the round of 16 and the group win. However, the Three Lions didn't convince in this match either, only managing a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Despite the result, the atmosphere wasn't dampened, they reported. A good mix of Danish and English fans, along with many Scottish supporters from the previous match, created a lively atmosphere. Nevertheless, the rain that started at the final whistle somewhat reflected England's performance, according to the two.

The third and decisive group match was watched separately by the two. While Bobby headed back to the fan zone, Andrew tried his luck at getting a last-minute ticket for the game. Surprisingly, he succeeded. But that was the most exciting part of the evening, as the England performance definitely wasn't. Despite the 0-0 draw, it was an experience to be there and witness the great stadium atmosphere. "And somehow we still managed to win the group," Andrew summarized.
