Anyone who follows the women's team of SpVgg Mögeldorf 2000 on Instagram knows the routine: Wednesday is Mögimittwoch, or MöMi for short. That's when the Mögelladies share insights from the locker room, training sessions, everyday team life, or simply moments that show what the team is like off the handball court. What started as a casual idea in 2025 has long since become a key part of the team's public presence.

No one could have predicted, however, that a video featuring spized underwear would become their first viral hit. The clip racked up more than 600,000 views. “It was more of a desperate MöMi Wednesday,” Vanessa Ochsendorf reveals. The SpVgg center back therefore describes the underwear video as “our door opener, because it also brought us together with spized.”

There is no fixed editorial schedule; only Wednesday is set in stone. Ideas emerge spontaneously, trends are tested and, above all, the goal is to have fun. This mix of spontaneity and humor is what defines the Mögelladies’ content. For Vanessa, the videos are therefore more than just entertainment. They show what the team is really like: open, friendly and with a good dose of self-irony.

The Mögelladies are part of a club that is much larger than its handball department. The roots of today’s SpVgg Mögeldorf 2000 date back to the 19th century. The club was formed in 2001 through the merger of Turnerbund Nürnberg-Mögeldorf 1879 e.V. and Sportvereinigung Nürnberg-Ost. Today, Mögeldorf brings together numerous sports, from football, tennis and handball to volleyball, table tennis, gymnastics and various martial arts.

The common denominator is sport. But club life is shaped by the people who bring it to life. In keeping with the motto of the club from eastern Nuremberg: “In a world that is becoming increasingly digital and individualistic, we offer a sense of togetherness that will remain truly attractive in the future.” And that applies to the Mögelladies, too.

MöMi: When injury breaks spark creativity

Vanessa Ochsendorf is now something of a Mögeldorf veteran – at least when it comes to the team’s more recent history. The 31-year-old has been playing for SpVgg for around ten years. Handball, however, has been part of her life for almost as long as she can remember. “I’ve been playing since I was five or six, since first grade,” she says. At first, her mother wanted to get her into football. The problem: her team consisted exclusively of boys.

Through the mother of a classmate, she eventually found her way to handball. After coming through the youth ranks at 1. FC Nürnberg and playing for two other clubs, she eventually moved to Mögeldorf. Today, the club has long since become her sporting home. The fact that she would one day also play a major role in shaping the team’s social media presence, however, was not necessarily part of the plan.

According to Vanessa, her enthusiasm for social media had always been there, and videos and trends had also been part of everyday life at the Mögelladies. At first, however, they played more of a supporting role. It was only when the team decided to focus more deliberately on its TikTok channel that things became much more intense.

During the early stages, the content team around Vanessa and her teammates Anna-Lisa, Kim and Pia mainly used their injury-related time off to develop the project and bring their ideas to life. “We had a lot of time then,” Vanessa explains. Like Kim and Pia, she had to spend an extended period on the sidelines due to injury. While the others were training, they used the sessions to shoot videos instead. With success: The first TikTok videos quickly turned into something bigger. Instagram followed, and today it is the team’s main focus.

And it is precisely there that you can see what makes the Mögelladies special: The videos are no longer just about handball, but also offer a glimpse into the team and the bond between its players.

“We are more than just a handball team”

Because the Mögelladies are a close-knit team off the court as well. “We are more than just a handball team,” Vanessa says. What she means is that the players are also friends outside of handball. This sense of togetherness is especially important for new players: No one should feel like an outsider or as if they are new to the group. So how would you describe such a team in three words? Vanessa’s answer: “Open-hearted, ambitious and quirky.”

Despite all the friendship and fun, the Mögeldorf team also shares the ambition to achieve something on the court. “We can focus, too.” Last season, however, things went anything but according to plan. Mathematically, the team would even have been relegated from the Bezirksoberliga Mittelfranken. When another team withdrew from the league, the Mögelladies were ultimately spared relegation. Looking back, Vanessa has to admit: “The season was more bad than good.”

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old is optimistic about the new season. The team has strengthened its squad, while several injured players are also returning. “Purely in terms of our playing ability, we can compete near the top. We’ve just lacked consistency lately.” The goal for the 2026/27 season is therefore clear: “We definitely want to finish in the top half of the table.”

New jerseys, new Squad, same Mögelladies

With the new season comes a new opportunity for the Mögeldorf team: As members of the spized Squad, which also includes teams such as Rumelner TV and SV Blau-Weiß Sande (both volleyball), they have the chance to show another side of themselves and their team – without losing sight of what matters most: playing handball together.

“We never expected that a sportswear company would be so interested in a team from the Bezirksoberliga,” Vanessa says. So they are all the more excited about the collaboration: “We’re super excited to create things and content with spized.”

The Mögelladies have also put their own stamp on their new jersey. A special jersey contest was created for the new design, giving every player the opportunity to submit her own design. The team then voted on the entries, with their own followers also getting a say. The only requirement besides the club colors, blue and red: “It was important to us that the jersey remained simple without losing its personal touch.” Small details such as the “Mögelladies” lettering on the shorts or sleeves add that individual touch. With the Mögelladies, personality is in the details.

Just do it and have fun

Perhaps that is also the most important lesson to take away from the Mögeldorf team’s story. They did not have a sophisticated social media strategy when they started creating content. They had no idea that a spontaneous video would eventually turn into Mögimittwoch. And they certainly could not have imagined that a “desperate MöMi Wednesday” featuring underwear would one day open the door to a collaboration with a sportswear company like spized.

They simply gave it a try. Vanessa’s advice to other amateur teams is therefore straightforward: “Just do it and have fun. If you’re having fun, everything else falls into place.” For the Mögelladies, that strategy seems to be working pretty well so far.

They have found their own style and, above all, they genuinely enjoy sharing it together. So there is already plenty to look forward to next Wednesday: MöMi, of course.
