Think up creative team names yourself - 7 tips

Anyone can copy it! But maybe you have the incentive to come up with your very own funny team name. Then we would like to give you 7 tips that can support your creative brainstorming process:

1. Proceed in a structured way


In order to find a team name as a complete team that feels coherent to everyone, it is useful to structure yourself well in advance. It is best to appoint a secretary to receive and sort all the suggestions, or you can create a clear spreadsheet that you can all access and vote on at the end. 

Then the brainstorming process begins: In order to find a truly original name, you should start by adding any suggestion, no matter how crazy, to the list - who knows what might come out of it. You should also take your time. A creative idea sometimes takes a long time to come up with.

2. Create recognition value


  • What makes your team stand out? 
  • What do you all have in common in the team? 
  • How do you act like a group?
  • What special features or characteristics does your team have? 

These are all questions you can ask yourself in order to create a recognition value with your team name. You can also work with positive associations: Which terms evoke positive feelings in you? Perhaps you feel a strong connection to your homeland, have a common favourite pub or have a special taste in music.

3. Include sport in the name


Original and funny team names can also be specifically adapted to the respective sport. Word games with the sport itself or the specific jargon are very popular. For example, a volleyball team could be called "Blocked Party" or "New kids on the Block". There is no limit to creativity here.

4. Be oriented towards large clubs


A classic for funny team names is the parody of big sports clubs or sporting idols. A player like Virgil Van Dijk, for example, is known to pretty much EVERYONE. With a team name like "Rhythm of Van Dijk", for example, you can ensure a particularly high recognition value. 


Nevertheless, you should make sure that your parody is clearly different from the original name and that you do not deface it. This may annoy the rights holder and lead to legal action.

5. Be inspired by the sponsor


Maybe you as a team are planning to get a sponsor on board or have already been able to win one. This is also a great starting point for creating original and fun team names. Not only the sponsor name, but also the logo can be included in the creative process and, depending on the agreement, suitable elements can be adopted.

6. Include alliteration, rhymes or puns


We have already mentioned the puns above. You can never go wrong with them. But literary tricks such as alliteration (the same initial letter in consecutive words) and rhymes also look particularly good in team names and are better remembered.

7. Interview outsiders


Who hasn't experienced this: sometimes you are so stuck with a few ideas that you become blind to new ones. In this case, it can help to ask outsiders who are not involved in the sport. It is sometimes astonishing what appropriate associations can be found in this way.

The sporting goods manufacturer spized and the non-profit organisation Meerleben e.V. joined forces for a good cause at the Syltlauf 2025 - a collaboration that did not necessarily focus on athletic performance, but above all on social commitment that supports children and young people in the long term. The Sylt-based association took part in the 42nd Syltlauf with its employees and used the event to collect donations for itself and for the “Wir für Carlotta” campaign. spized supported the campaign and provided the association with 10 customised jerseys worth almost €430.
