Perhaps you’ve seen it on Instagram or heard about it at the gym: more and more people are training for "Hyrox". But is this just another extreme trend for super-athletes, or can anyone really take part?

The short answer: Hyrox is for everyone. It is the first sport to perfectly combine running and functional fitness while making your performance measurable. Here, you will find out why the event is exploding worldwide and how you can survive (and enjoy!) your first race.

The concept: 8 runs, 8 rounds of suffering

Hyrox calls itself the "World Series of Fitness Racing". The format is exactly the same at every event across the globe. This makes your performance comparable – regardless of whether you are competing in Hamburg, New York or London.

The formula is: 1km run + 1 workout. You repeat this process 8 times.

Between the running and the stations, you consistently enter the so-called "Roxzone". This is the transition area where you drink water (as quickly as possible) and head to the next station.

The 8 disciplines (in order)

These are the stations that await you between the 1km running laps:

  1. 1000m SkiErg: Cross-country skiing simulation on the machine (hits arms & shoulders hard).
  2. 50m Sled Push: Pushing a heavy sled (leg burner!).
  3. 50m Sled Pull: Pulling the sled towards you on a rope (back & biceps).
  4. 80m Burpee Broad Jumps: Perform a burpee, jump forward, repeat. (The psychologically toughest part).
  5. 1000m Rowing: Rowing on the ergometer.
  6. 200m Farmers Carry: Carrying two heavy kettlebells (grip strength!).
  7. 100m Sandbag Lunges: Lunges with a sandbag on your neck.
  8. 75/100 Wall Balls: Throwing a medicine ball at a target on the wall (squat + throw).

Who can take part? (The categories)

The great thing about Hyrox: you don't have to do it alone. There are different divisions, so everyone from beginners to pros can find their place.

  • Open: The standard category. Manageable weights for athletes with average fitness levels.
  • Pro: The same format, but with significantly heavier weights. For experienced athletes.
  • Doubles (Our tip for beginners!): You compete as a team of two (men, women or mixed). You run together, but split the workouts. One person rows while the other catches their breath. Perfect for pushing each other!
  • Relay: A team of four shares the work. Each person does 2x runs and 2x workouts.

Is there a time limit? No! The average finisher takes about 1:30 hours. Pros manage it in under 60 minutes, while some beginners take 2.5 hours. No matter how long you need: you will be celebrated at the finish line.

The right equipment: What you need to look out for

Hyrox is not your average fun run. An old cotton t-shirt will make you miserable here.

  • The shoes: You need a compromise between a running shoe (for the 8km) and stable support (for the sled push). Pure carbon racing shoes are often too unstable.
  • The clothing: You move a lot during burpees and wall balls. Your shirt shouldn't slip or chafe, and it must wick away sweat immediately. Nothing is more annoying than constantly having to fiddle with your shirt during wall balls.

Team Spirit: Your look for the Roxzone

Unlike a marathon, Hyrox is an extreme community sport. Especially in Doubles and Relays, or as a gym team, your presence is key.

At spized, you can create your very own Hyrox shirt.

  • Your names on the back (so the crowd can cheer you on).
  • Your gym logo on the chest.
  • Matching shorts that remain squat-proof and stay in place.

Show the competition that you are competing as a unit before the starting gun even goes off.
