Four core values and a mission beyond sport
Donau Volleys Regensburg openly champion four core values: colourful, united, social, and role-model. Behind these lies a distinctly educational vision. The club from the Upper Palatinate sees itself as more than just a competitive sports framework; it holds a social responsibility to provide children and young people with a welcoming environment, regardless of age, gender, background, religion, or sexual orientation.
In 2020, ten enthusiasts founded Donau Volleys in the midst of the pandemic. The journey from those beginnings to becoming the city's largest volleyball club involved genuine grassroots dedication: in October 2021, Donau Volleys seized the opportunity to take over TSV Deggendorf's playing rights for the 3rd League East, effective from the 2022/23 season — with almost the entire team relocating to Regensburg. The fact that the boys' U12s became Bavarian runner-up just four years later, and nearly all youth teams qualified for the Bavarian Championships a year after that, demonstrates that their vision has translated into real sporting substance across both youth and senior levels. The clear goal: to establish Regensburg and the Upper Palatinate as a genuine hub for volleyball in Bavaria — in a city where regular league play had stagnated for years and only a recreational mixed league survived.
How well this philosophy works in practice is illustrated by a story shared by board member and co-founder Fernando Acosta: in 2021, the club built its very first youth team. Five years later, during last season, one of those original players lined up alongside him as a teammate for the first time. "I felt so proud," says Acosta, "because he hadn't just developed as an athlete, but had also succeeded in finding a true sense of community within the club." The club is growing so rapidly that team rosters are filled almost to maximum capacity — a problem Acosta admits is a rather good one to have.
