Who ist Nadine Angerer?

Nadine Angerer is regarded as one of the defining figures in German women’s football: two-time World Champion, five-time European Champion, and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2013. In 2016, she was inducted into the German Football Museum's Hall of Fame.

But Angerer is far from a legacy act. On the contrary: following the end of her playing career, she became a goalkeeping coach, initially at her former club Portland Thorns FC in the USA. Since March 2024, she has been coaching the Swiss national team, meaning she continues to work in the heart of the football world every single day.

What sets Angerer apart from many other brand ambassadors is that she knows football not just from the world stage, but from the everyday reality of club life. She has experienced first-hand the level of commitment required behind the scenes – even in environments where conditions are far from professional.

From the professional pitch to everyday club life

Elite sport and grassroots sport may sound like two different worlds. But they aren't — at least not in what truly matters.

Angerer knows this from an experience that shapes her to this day. During the 2011 home World Cup — the tournament where Germany, as two-time defending champions, were the overwhelming favourites — the team crashed out in the quarter-finals. Not due to a lack of quality, but because the team culture was missing. Doors remained closed, stress dictated the tone, and the common ground was lost. Looking back, Angerer says it was a logical consequence.

The conclusion she draws hits the nail on the head, and it’s a statement that applies to every club, regardless of budget:

"What you absolutely don’t need money for, and what I find to be the alpha and omega of everything — whether in professional sport, amateur sport, or normal working life: is managing to create good chemistry, a good team dynamic, and a good culture. That costs nothing. Appreciation and empathy are at the very top of my list; everything else is secondary."

It is precisely these experiences, observations, and self-reflections from her career that Angerer brings to the spized Club Academy.

Angerer herself grew up in a small village club. To this day, she remembers collecting beer cups to help fund the club’s summer fete. She knows the unique charm that grassroots sports clubs radiate.

"I love attending amateur matches because I appreciate the honesty of it all. That sense of community — I find it wonderful. And I’m more than happy to just go there, have a beer, and enjoy myself."

This is the core of her role at the Club Academy: no complex theories from the professional game that need translating for everyday use. Instead, she is a voice that understands both sides and knows what truly matters.
